A Hope In The Unseen

Links for some of the issues we addressed this week. Here you can read about the 'Tiger Mother'. Here is an essay by Malcolm Gladwell about his biracial background.

Again we are beginning A Hope In The Unseen for next week. Please read as much as you can over the weekend. If you make good progress, try to read Defending Diversity, or at least start it, as well.

Things to think about for next week:

1) What is your ideal college? Where would it be located (urban, suburban, rural)< what kinds of classes would be offered, what kind of people would go there? What would the facilities and buildings be like?

2) Think about Melba's experiences in Warriors Don't Cry, and those of her peers, and compare them to the ostensibly more receptive environment Cedric faces.

Beginning to think about papers:

These are the two alternate paper topics for the July 14 (again, Thu, not Fri) due date. Choose one of these, the one you find most interesting.

1. Why doesn’t Cedric fit in at the college he attends? Is it the school’s fault? His fault? The fault of a still-racist society? Nobody’s fault? Another option we haven’t thought of? Pick one of these and discuss, making sure to use evidence from the book,

2. Discuss Cedric's relationship with his father. What is working in that relationship, what is not? It is more a strength or a problem for young Cedric as he goes through high school and college?

For now (on the blog) all I want you to do is post below one or two sentences that might begin to address either of these questions. anytime before we meet on Monday is fine.

  1. My ideal college would be medium sized population. I don't want to be in a small small college, but not a BIG one as my high school, about 3,000-4,000 kids is okay. I'd have to say rural. This college would have a variety of science/medical (veterinary, biology, organic) and arts (writing, music, art, creativity) classes along with clubs and programs. Students can participate in clubs or create them as well as put on shows and performances. People desiring well paying and decent careers would attend this college, and the buildings won't just be rectangle and square, they can be cylindrical, crescent moon shapes and so on with a planted campus, with few cement trails. Faculty can be respectful older and younger adults and even students. People with leadership skills, sense of humor and understanding, some weirdos and some skeptics to balance it out :)

Though Melba and her peers experienced hellish torment from whites in Central High, Cedric I believe just faces culture shock and mild racism at MIT.

  2. My idea college is a medium populated area with people from all over studying fashion design and merchandising where most people can get along. Theres also different activites for everyone. I prefer the college thats by a city but not in New York.

  4. Bianca yes culture shock is a very apt term...also even if there isn't racism the people at MIT are still dealing with the legacy of racism--which however well-intentioned they cannot simply wish away.

Interesting that both you and Aren preferred medium-sized colleges, we'll talk about that more. Liked the description of the buildings!

  5. my ideal size college would be a small population. i would like to attend a small college because i want to build a closer relationship with my professor. feel like in a big college i would lose track and not pay attention and my relationship would my professor would be poor because there are like lover 400 students in a class, therefore it would be hard to build a relationship. am use to getting to know my teachers really closely because i attend a charter school so everyone knows each other , which is a good feeling. i could go to my teachers anytime and ask for help. The college i attend should have about 2000-2500 students.
